Courses Taught

 

Foundations of 2D Design (ARTS 11100). This course introduces students to the elements of art and principles of design.

 

Digital Art (ARTS 2370) introduces students to the use of Photoshop, Illustrator, and other Adobe Creative Cloud applications. The creation, editing, and manipulation of an image is examined as a form of critical, cultural production. Generative art and Processing are also introduced.

 

Photo 1: Digital Photography (ARTS 2322) introduces students to digital photography as a form of critical image production. Special attention is given to composing images according to the elements and principles of design. Historical and contemporary cultural literacy is emphasized. Discussions and critiques address the production of visual content, the consumption of images, image inundation, visual information pollution, and the distinguishing characteristics of visual knowledge.

 

Typography (ARTS 2375) provides students with an overview of type and letterforms. Historical and contemporary cultural literacy is emphasized. Print and screen- based projects familiarize students with the process of problem discovery, creation, setting, and solving. Presentations, critiques, reading assignments, and class discussions allow the student to develop a vocabulary and a critical framework for speaking about design skills, techniques, and practices.

 

Graphic Design History (ARTS 3355) a chronological survey of graphic design history and theory.

 

Graphic Design I (ARTS 3370) introduces students to graphic design as a form of visual knowledge production, documentation, and communication. Historical and contemporary cultural literacy is emphasized. Print and screen- based projects familiarize students with the process of problem discovery, creation, setting, and solving. Presentations, critiques, reading assignments, and class discussions allow the student to develop a vocabulary and a critical framework for speaking about design skills, techniques, and practices.

 

Graphic Design II (ARTS 3375) Students analyze, create, set, and solve visual communications problems in this project-based course. Graphic design is examined as a form of visual knowledge production, documentation, and communication.

 

Graphic Design III (ARTS 4373) This course covers advanced graphic design as a form of visual knowledge production, documentation, and communication. Historical and contemporary cultural literacy is emphasized. Digital, web-based, motion graphics, generative design, and UI/UX design projects familiarize students with the process of problem discovery, creation, setting, and solving. Presentations, critiques, reading assignments, and class discussions allow the student to develop a vocabulary and a critical framework for speaking about design skills, techniques, and practices.

 

Interactive Design (ARTS 4375) introduces students to basic HTML and CSS. Also introduced: content management systems (CMS), user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, responsive and mobile- first adaptive design.

 

Applied Graphic Design (ARTS 4375). Students enrolled in this course work on client- based projects, often for local non- profit organizations. Recent clients include: Austin Chamber Music Center, Austin, Texas; Family Promise, East Bell County; Central Counties Services, Temple, Texas; Flying Vikings, Belton, Texas; and Neema Village, Arusha Tanzania, Africa.

 

Senior Design Studio (ARTS 4379). In this capstone course, students work to produce a cohesive body of work.
